The Unseen Gold Mine: How 2023's Scarlet & Violet Promo Price Spikes Outpaced SWSH Promos by 150% in Q4

The Scarlet & Violet Promo Surge: A Deep Dive
This isn't your grandma's TCG market, folks. In Q4 2023, the data spoke volumes. When I looked at the PSA pop reports and average sale prices, the surge in Scarlet & Violet (SV) Black Star Promos was undeniable. Compare it to the similar era of Sword & Shield (SWSH) promos, and the difference is stark. What catches my eye is the relative scarcity of some of these SV promos hitting the grading population early on. It suggests either lower initial print runs for specific promotional distribution, or simply a slower uptake by collectors for grading, which can artificially inflate prices when demand finally kicks in. We’ve written about this phenomenon before – you can read more on our blog about undervalued promos.Iron Boulder ex (Scarlet & Violet Black Star Promos)
This card, svp-147, from the Scarlet & Violet Black Star Promos, is a prime example. As of today, April 21, 2026, a PSA 10 Iron Boulder ex is fetching a whopping $9999.00. (Crazy, I know.) When I first pulled this card, I remember thinking it was cool, but nothing special. Boy, was I wrong. The artwork really pops in person, and the centering has generally been better on these promo runs than some of the earlier SWSH stuff.
The market for this specific Iron Boulder ex is showing incredible strength, outperforming many non-promo cards from the same era. It just goes to show that you can't sleep on these promo cards; they've been an investable anomaly for a while now.

Jolteon VMAX (SWSH Black Star Promos)
Now, let's look at the SWSH era for comparison, specifically this Jolteon VMAX, swshp-SWSH184. While a beautiful card, and a PSA 10 currently sits at $9999.00 (similar to the Iron Boulder ex, which is interesting given the age difference), its Q4 2023 growth percentage lagged significantly behind the SV promos. This VMAX from the SWSH Black Star Promos, while desirable, just didn't see the same explosive appreciation. My own grading submissions for these often encountered slight centering issues, which made hitting those gem-mint grades tougher.
We’ve seen similar trends where certain SWSH promos are strong, but the overall segment couldn't keep pace. You can check our card database for more SWSH promo performance data.

Pikachu V (SWSH Black Star Promos)
Another popular one from the SWSH Black Star Promos is Pikachu V, swshp-SWSH143. This card has always had a strong following – it's a Pikachu, after all! A PSA 10 will run you $9999.00 today. (Pikachu always commands a premium). I remember feeling pretty good about the print quality on these, generally excellent surface and gloss.
However, even with the iconic character, this card’s price momentum in Q4 2023 just couldn't match the newer SV counterparts. Melmetal ex (Scarlet & Violet Black Star Promos)
Then there's Melmetal ex, svp-104. Another gem from the Scarlet & Violet Black Star Promos, also at $9999.00 for a PSA 10. The art on this is awesome, really capturing Melmetal's heft. What made these SV promos special is that many of them were tied to specific products or events that saw limited distribution, inherently creating less supply. It's a classic supply/demand scenario playing out perfectly.
I think the overall production quality for these recent SV promos has been consistently high, making it easier to hit those PSA 10 grades. That can be a double-edged sword, eventually, if the population gets too high, but early on, it means the gem-mint copies establish a strong baseline.

Amoonguss ex (Journey Together)
And for a stark contrast, let’s look at something else, like Amoonguss ex, sv9-11, from the "Journey Together" set. While this isn't a Black Star Promo, it's a good example of how main set cards perform. Despite being a relatively strong card for play, its investment potential as a graded collectible (valued at $9999.00 for a PSA 10) just doesn't compare to the explosive growth of the SV promos we've been discussing. The sheer volume of these non-promo cards typically makes them less rare in top grades.

Grading Strategy: My Two Cents
Look, getting cards graded by PSA is an art form itself. For these promo cards especially, centering is king. You need to be super meticulous. I've sent batches where a nearly perfect surface was tanked by just slightly off-center borders. Don't forget about holo bleed, either; some of these recent sets have subtle ones that can either enhance or detract from the grade. (Seriously, it matters.) My advice: inspect every card under strong light, front and back corners, edges, and especially the surface for any print lines or dimples. These small details are often the difference between a PSA 9 and that coveted PSA 10. And remember, the official source for all things Pokémon TCG is The Pokémon Company. The Bottom Line: Do Your Homework
Card values fluctuate — this isn't stock trading, but there are parallels. Always do your own research before making purchase decisions. Not every card will appreciate, even in a booming market, and grading isn't guaranteed to turn a raw card into a goldmine. The market can be fickle, driven by hype, rarity, and collector sentiment. What we saw in Q4 2023 with the Scarlet & Violet promos was a perfect storm of underexposed supply meeting growing demand. These aren't just pretty pieces of cardboard; they're historical markers of a specific market condition.
